This class will cover two printmaking processes: stone lithography and the collagraph print. Lithography is a chemical process that involves placing a drawn or painted image on limestone and then transferring the image to paper. Participants will learn to create black & white lithographs. Using lithographic crayons, autographic ink and tusche washes. The collagraph is an intaglio process which involves creating a textured plate with materials such as: sandpaper, wallpaper, glue and other textured materials. This class will include three printmaking processes: the solar plate print, a new printmaking method that uses light sensitive polymer plates to create either intaglio or relief images. The technique involves transferring an image that is drawn, painted, photocopied, or photographed on vellum, to the solar plate using a UV light source; the second is an intaglio process (dry point) whereby an image is created by engraving lines into a plastic plate; the third is a three-color monotype process that involves printing three different colors on Plexiglas plate to create a multi-color image. Gloria Miller Allen has taught watercolor for over 20 years and has been painting in watercolor her whole life. She has been accepted in over 40 national and international exhibits and earned a signature membership in the many watercolor societies. She is the Juror for the 2008 Watercolor Society exhibit at The Wichita Center for the Arts.
Michael Angelotti is our Artist in Residence in the clay department. He has gained experiences from a large variety of places: Edinboro University in PA where he worked in the University’s permanent collection; McKean, PA, where he was Steve Kemenyffy’s personal assistant; Glen Spey, NY as the camp director of the ceramics program; and Erie, PA at Allen Stoneware Gallery. He will be teaching some of our youth and adult clay courses. We are very pleased to have him on our WCFTA staff.
Darcy Badiali is an extremely talented large scale clay artist from Grover Beach, California. His latest exhibition was at the American Museum of Ceramic Art, Los Angeles. He attended Kansas City Art Institute and received his Master of Fine Arts from Arizona State University. He works predominantly on wheel thrown stoneware vessels. The size of his work will blow your mind. He will open your eyes to the endless possibilities of clay and his remarkable large scale works.
Doug Billings graduated with a BFA degree in Printmaking from Mankato State University, MN. He was accepted into the printmaking graduate program at Wichita State University by the prominent and respected printmaker Prof. David Bernard and graduated with his MFA degree in 1982. Since then, he has continued to work steadily at his profession as a printmaker and has become a well-known fixture in the printmaking department at Wichita State. He is a member/partner of and was President of Gallery XII in 2007, Wichita’s premier artist’s cooperative gallery and is also a member and former President of the Artists Guild of Wichita. Doug is a member of the Society of American Graphic Artists (SAGA) in New York, the Boston Printmakers of Boston, MA, the Print Consortium of Kansas City, MO, the American Print Alliance in Peachtree, GA, The Print Center in Philadelphia, PA and the American Color Print Society of Princeton, NJ.
Mary Binford Miller has been a professional oil painter since 1975 and is the president of the Kansas Academy of Oil painting. She has a extensive list of exhibitions, awards and teaching experences.
Susan de Wit is a long time local artist and Center member who works in various media. She has been enameling for the past four years under Brian Hinkle. Susan taught ceramics at Newman University for five years. She greatly enjoys working with large groups of people to create collaborative community art. Susan is currently a graduate student in WSU’s School of Fine Arts. She maintains a private studio in the city and is a founding member of Works of HEaRT, Inc.; a non profit organization that works for social change through the arts.
Julie Freige melted her first rod of glass in 2001 and knew she had discovered the medium to express her desire to create. After moving to Wichita 4 years ago, she opened Beadazzled, a contemporary glass studio supplying lampwork artists a place to expand their knowledge and meet other glass enthusiasts. She has been teaching for 2 years, captivating others and tempting them with the urge to melt glass.
Jim Gross began his study of art at the Center in 1961 and has been on the faculty since 1974. Gross earned an MFA from WSU, which included a Guggenheim Museum studio visit. He is a member of American Abstract Artists. Jim’s abstract works were the subject of two solo shows in New York and the Wichita Art Museum exhibited his work in a survey of late 20th century art. His works are in the Whitney, the Guggenheim, and the Met and in a memorial exhibit of the World Trade Center. His work is illustrated in Pioneers of Abstract Art and a new book, On Edge, American Artists, NY. He received a special Wichita State University alumni award given by Governor Graves in 2001.
Kathy Fathi is a silversmith and jewelry artist. She has a degree in English and Art from Wichita State University and has also completed her Child Development Association certificate in early childhood education. She has taught a variety of art classes with the Wichita Public School system.
Leslie Kinder, a Graduate Gemologist, gold-silver, and platinum-smith and the owner of Melange Jewelry, loves to share her jewelry making knowledge and skills with our students. A native of Wichita, Leslie earned a degree from the Gemological Institute of America and has been a featured speaker at numerous conferences around the world.
Bill Koch has been teaching dance styles, since 1988. His instruction and experience range from country & western, to popular ballroom, to Latin & tango, and various swing-styles. Bill has taught numerous classes at The Wichita Center for the Arts, Bethel College’s Fine Arts Academy (Newton), Amira Dance Productions, and Wichita State University as well as many other locations.
Peter Mader can be found melting glass, nurturing plants, teaching children or fixing what is broken. He holds a BFA in painting from WSU and has a keen interest in natural science and the physics of art.
Lori Martin-Price earned her Associates Degree in Design from Hutchinson Community College and a BA in Metalsmithing from the University of Kansas. She is a professional artist who participates in various art fairs and is currently teaching high school art classes. Her website is www.llmpsilverworks.com.
John McCluggage is a native Kansan and received his training at multiple colleges and universities around the state. He has been an intern at the Archie Bray Foundation in Helena, Montana and a crew leader at the Odyian Retreat Center, in Northern California, where he built monumental bronze sculptures. John is the founder of Shika Studios and makes both functional ware and sculpture.
Babs Mellor is a professional sculptor whose work is contained in collections both nationally and internationally. She has studied with the world’s leading sculptors in the United States and Italy.
Karri Ossman has been a highly respected gardener in Wichita for decades. She is responsible for the beautiful gardens at Wichita State University.
John Pirtle is currently working on his Bachelor’s Degree in Studio Arts with an emphasis on Painting. He attended high school at Kapaun Mt. Carmel, and during his sophomore through senior years was the editorial cartoonist for the school newspaper. Throughout college he has drawn cartoons for both the Butler County newspaper, and is on the cartooning staff for the Wichita State University newspaper. He has been involved with four art showings in the last year, two of which were solo exhibits. He loves all aspects of drawing and painting whether it is cartoons or more realistic styles, both of which he likes to experiment with.
Margery Pacheco has served Wichita as the Chef and Owner of the Upper Crust Café since 1989. In August of 2007 she closed the café to lunch but continues to offer it for private parties. She has started a wholesale operation from the same location and has no plans to quit. Margery was born in Berlin, Germany to a career military father and a European born mother. Traveling throughout Europe sampling other culture’s food set in motion her future career choice. After a brief time as a professional singer she started catering out of her home in Colorado Springs. So come join Margery for some fun and she will teach you how to make some fast, delicious food that you will be able to recreate at home with no stress!
Dennis Rhoades creates intense impressions of the Southwestern landscape. His pastel paintings have received special awards in the Pastel Society of America juried exhibition, the Colorado National Show, 4th place in the pastel journals’ 100 best competition and many others. Jennifer Walterscheid is currently teaching kindergarten through eighth grade art at Holy Cross Lutheran School. She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from Wichita State University. Enameling and watercolor painting are her passions. Jennifer’s work can be found at Karg Art Glass in Kechi, KS and Adelante Gallery in Scottsdale, AZ
Paul Wingo is currently teaching at Wichita State University where he received his MFA in painting and drawing. He has exhibited in Oklahoma and Kansas and he will be included in the School of Art and Design Faculty Biennial at Wichita State University.
