“Encaustic”
Encaustic painting involves using pre-bought wax with pigments already imbedded or beeswax to which colored pigments are added. The liquid paste is then applied to varied supports including but not limited to canvas, wood, metal and paper. Because the encaustic paint cools in minutes, additional coats can be added almost immediately.
Once its surface has cooled, encaustic paint presents a permanent finish and yet the painting can be revised and reworked at any time. It is a particularly durable paint and over time can retain all the freshness of a newly finished work. Encaustic can be laid on in delicately thin glazes or thick.
Encaustic painting is a great medium to employ textural elements to your painting surfaces, glaze over surfaces and is a great adhesive for collage work.
Textural effects can be achieved in many different ways with encaustic paint. You can apply the paint in an impasto fashion ala prima or wait for the paint to cool and carve out the paint or use a small torch or even an iron with wax paper over it to flatten the layers. Glazing can be done by brushing a layer of paint whether opaque or transparent paint over the previous layers.
Encaustic can be embedded with papers, foils, strings, fabric, photos or found objects of almost any material. The preservative quality of wax allows the use of organic materials, which will not deteriorate if well coated with the paint. Even newsprint is protected from yellowing because the wax seals it off from oxygen.
